Bit tired tonight. Not surprising I suppose after 24 hours on a plane, so won’t write much, as our photos say it all really. Melbourne, cold, wet and only 15 degrees. Rome, foggy at first and then beautifully sunny. Plane trip is as you would expect, long and boring, but I did catch up on my movie viewing and then managed about 5 hours reasonable sleep.
Easy trip into Rome and to our apartment, though actually getting into the room was more technical as the owners were so busy cleaning to loud classical music as they vacuumed, that they didn’t hear us knocking. Rossana’s mum was finally called in by a neighbour and boy, did she let fly. Wish my Italian was better. At first, I didn’t realise that this little old Italian lady who was being so vocal was her mamma and I thought, these Italians, with their gestures and theatrics!
Rossana was a tour guide so was full of information about everywhere to go – so off we trotted for a full afternoon of sightseeing. Our highlights – ordering pizza by the metre, just like curtains, and the guy behind the counter using dressmaking shears to cut off how much we wanted. The Pantheon – you forget just how huge it is ; St Peters Piazza, also huge and so imposing. This time, we went up the cupola for a wonderful view over Rome from above – bellissima. They were setting up for some big event (the Pope doing something), so the place was CROWDED.
And now, to bed, as M is so tired that he has just fallen off the bed asleep as he was reading a guide book.
Sogni doro.
Please note the Nuns window shopping for ecclesiastical robes!!
Tomorrow, Il Museo Vaticano, a big one and no doubt, more tired feet.
Am so excited that I can finally comment after all these years!!!!!!. When we were at St Peters the pope was going to give a mass later that morning & yep buses, cars, people, bikes, trikes, you name it, all had one destination in mind, & we were at first oblivious to it all till we got to very close to the piazza. Hastily then made a b-line to the Vatican museum & as we had cleverly purchased our tickets on line the day before went straight in bypassing the monstrous lines. So - glad you have arrived safely & enjoy tomorrow xx PJ
